The Premier Trophy was formed in 1999 with teams from the Premier League competing. In 2003 they were joined by the Elite League teams and the competition was renamed the British League Cup. This joint league competition lasted for just one season before the Premier Trophy was reintroduced for the 2004 season. In 2011 the competition was replaced by the Premier League Cup
