Racing was revived on a national basis in 1946, but many pre-war riders were still serving in the armed forces and most had returned home during the war. So, it was decided to stage an alternative meeting to a world final: with sponsorship from the Sunday Dispatch, the British Riders Championship was organised. Two qualifying rounds were held on National and Northern League tracks respectively, with entrants having to compete in six meetings. The 16 qualifiers from these preliminary rounds, 12 from the National League and 4 from the Northern, started the final on level terms. National League Qualifying Riders - Eric Chitty, Malcolm Craven, Jack Parker, Alec Stratham, Eric Langton, Tommy Price, Norman Parker, Ernie Price, Wally Lloyd, Ron Johnson, Bill Longley, Bill Kitchen, Ron Clarke, Lloyd Goff, Northern League Qualifying Riders - Jeff Lloyd, Bert Spencer, Frank Hodgson, Tommy Allott, Wilf Jay |
