Ivan Mauger became the first rider to win three consecutive World titles. He raced to a 15 point maximum at the Olympic Stadium Woroclav, Poland to clinch the title. Polands Pawel Waloszek was runner with his countryman Antoni Woryna in third place. On the way to the Final Mauger also clainmed the European Final title. The British Nordic Final was was by Sören Sjösten of Sweden. Hans-Jürgen Fritz won the Continental Final in Abensberg, Germany.

In the World Pairs New Zealand retained the title Ivan Mauger and Ronnie Moore were joined on the rostrum by Sweden and England.

On the 19th of September a Swedish team comprising of Ove Fundin, Bengt Jansson, Anders Michanek, and Sören Sjösten Sweden were crowned World Team Cup Champions.

In the British League Belle Vue were again champions with Wimbledon in second place. In the British League KO Cup Wimbledon defeated Belle Vue in the final.
Canterbury Crusaders won the second division with ipswich winning the KO Cup. In the regional competitions Coventry defeated Leicester in the final of the Midland Cup. The London Cup was staged as a mini league competition with Wimbledon winning. They also added the Metropolitan Gold Cup to the trophy cabinet.

The Lokeren Disaster
On the 14th of July a group of riders were involved in a fatal road accident in Belgium. The Minibus they were traveling in was involved in a collision with two other vehicles. Riders Peter Bradshaw, Martyn Piddock, Gary Everett and Malcolm Carmichael along team manager Phil Bishop and driver Henrikus Rommoes all lost their lives
Colin Pratt, Stan Stevens, Garry Hay and mechanic Roy Sullivan were all injured with Pratt's injuries ending his career.
