In 1997 the British League First and second divisions merged to form a new single tier league named the Premier League. This format ran for two years before the Elite League came into being as a new upper tier. The Premier League was reformatted as the new second tier. In 2006 play-offs were introduced with the winner crowned Premier League champions. The winner of the competition would then go on to race against the bottom Elite League team in the Promotion/Relegation Battle. No Premier League team won this match and this format was discontinued. Edinburgh are the most successful team in the competition winning the league three times and also play off champions twice. |
