report from the Daily Record
EDINBURGH Monarchs cemented bragging rights over their Scottish rivals as they raced to an emphatic double victory in the League Cup at the weekend.

Friday night’s 55-38 victory at Armadale might have been closer than the scoreline suggests but there was no doubting the outcome in Sunday’s return at Ashfield as the Monarchs scorched to a 58-35 win.

Friday's result was already enough to secure Edinburgh's passage into the semi final of the competition.

Glasgow are still waiting for their first win of the season and were never really close to finding it against the capital men who led from the off.

Tigers No 1 Kevin Wolbert failed to score from four starts, while veteran Mark Lemon scored just one. Glasgow's Danish reserves also struggled, scoring four between them.

Edinburgh, by comparison, had No1 Craig Cook in fine form with a 14 point score while Steve Worrall rode home with 11.

One highlight for the Tigers was the showing of French teenager Dimitri Berge, who top scored with 12 - his best performance yet in Glasgow colours.

And it was Berge who split the visiting pairing of Cook and Aaron Fox in heat one, as the visitors stamped their authority immediately.

Edinburgh went further ahead with 5-1s in heats two and four.

Glasgow manager Stewart Dickson tried to reduce the deficit by putting Rusty Harrison out on a tactical ride in the fifth heat, but he couldn't overcome Cook and Fox, before Sam Masters and Justin Sedgmen kept the Edinburgh bandwagon going with another 5-1.

Berge helped claw some points back in heat eight when winning on a tactical ride for a 7-2 to the home team, but that was the only dent his team could make into the deficit.

The home side did at least manage to stop the pace of the rot from heat nine onwards with three 3-3 heat results with wins from Pijper and Harrison, however Wolbert's lack of points at the top end made the task much more difficult.

Glasgow captain Theo Pijper, whose haul of seven was half of what he scored at Armadale in the first leg on Friday night, was visibly downbeat about the result.

He said: "I don't know what happened today. On Friday, me and Kevin were flying and suddenly - I don't know.

"I struggled in my first ride because I had the wrong sprocket on. I changed a little bit on the bike and I was getting going.

"But after that, it was already lost.

"I don't think we've had enough track time yet. But that's not an excuse - we need to be on the ball. There's no excuse for anybody. It just needs to happen."

Edinburgh remain unbeaten this season as their impressive start to 2014 continues.
