Old Meadowbank 1948-1954, 1960-1967

Old Meadowbank became home to the Monarchs in 1948. Marine Gardens had been in the hands of the Military during the war and they held onto it for some years after. Had this not been the case it is possible that speedway may have returned to the ground. The ground was also home to Leith Athletic who the Monarchs had been beside at Marine Gardens. Leith remained at the ground until their demise in 1953. The Grandstand at the stadium was originally the main stand at the Royal Gymnasium football ground which was home to St Bernard's FC. when they closed the stand was purchased dismantled and then rebuilt at Old Meadowbank. The track provided some of the best best racing ever seen in Scotland and is still fondly remembered by those who attended meetings. Sadly it was also saw tragedy the late great Peter Craven lost his life at the track after crashing into the safty fence. Sadly the ground was demolished to make way a new stadium that was built for the commonwealth games and speedway racing were not included in the plans.
