Edinburgh Monarchs 60 Workington Comets 34: Workington Comets’ hopes of winning the Premier League took a massive hit last night as Edinburgh Monarchs took a giant step towards the grand final with a resounding victory.

Comets were comprehensively beaten 60-34 at the Scotwaste Arena in their first meeting in this season's play-offs.
The result now means that Workington must take a maximum of three points from tonight’s (27th) return fixture at Derwent Park and then beat Berwick Bandits home and away in two weeks time to stand any chance of progressing to the play-off final.
Monarchs’ dominance on their home track this season continued against Workington, with the Scottish side yet to taste defeat at the Scotwaste Arena.
Monarchs’ Sam Masters (13 points), Justin Sedgmen (12 points) and Max Fricke (11 points) were all on top form for the league leaders.
Workington’s Ricky Wells (12 points) was the only standout performer for the visitors.
Captain Rene Bach was forced to withdraw from the meeting in heat 12 after hitting the air fence following a collision with Derek Sneddon.
Bach suffered a possible broken nose and is a doubt for tonight’s return fixture.
Comets team manager Tony Jackson said: “We expected a tough night. Considering the problems with injuries and how strong Edinburgh are, we did alright. Ricky Wells rode really well tonight.
“We are under no illusions that tonight will be very tough. Everybody is battered and bruised. But we won’t give up, we will keep fighting.”
Much like every team that has ridden at the Scotwaste Arena this season, Comets’ night got off to a bad start. The west Cumbrians suffered a 5-1 in heat two after Sneddon and Aaron Fox sprang out of the gate and never looked back.
That was followed by another 5-1 in the fourth heat with Masters and Sneddon flying out of the tapes to make it 16-8 overall.
Edinburgh opened up a 12-point gap in heat six with yet another 5-1. This time ex-Comet Craig Cook was well ahead of the chasing pack and his team-mate Sedgmen clinched second place for a 24-12 lead.
Bach was entrusted with the black and white helmet for a tactical ride in heat seven, but he failed to make it count.
Fox and Masters took the lead. Bach did well to pass Fox on bend two of lap one, but Masters held on for a 4-4 score.
Trailing 28-16, Workington opted for their second tactical ride in the very next heat.
This time Wells was handed the helmet and Workington secured their first and last win of the night.
Sneddon was excluded from the race after a fall and in the re-run Wells finished just behind Sedgmen after great battle between the pair where they both had turns overtaking one another.
Wells’ team-mate Simon Lambert finished in third to make it a 5-3 result and reduce the deficit to 31-21.
However, Workington’s joy was short-lived. Fricke and Steve Worrall were fastest out of the gate in heat nine for another 5-1 to make it 36-22 to Monarchs.
A further 5-1 to Edinburgh in heat 10 compounded Workington’s misery and added gloss to the scoreline for Monarchs at 41-23.
Successive 5-1 scores to Edinburgh followed in heats 13 and 14 to make it 57-31 going into the final race.
Wells won the final heat, but Sedgmen and Masters were close behind for a 3-3 to make the final score 60-34.
Edinburgh now have nine points in the group after beating Berwick Bandits home and away last weekend.
They require just one point tonight (7pm start) against Workington at Derwent Park to progress to the play-off final.
