report from Sheffield Telegraph

Hometown hero Simon Stead raced to a sensational victory on a dramatic night in the Premier League Riders’ Championship at Owlerton last night.
The Sheffield skipper entered the showpiece event desperate to claim a huge victory in front of an adoring home crowd.
The hugely popular 32 year old stormed to the top of the rostrum in unforgettable fashion – and he admitted he was lost for words after his remarkable triumph.
Said Stead: “It’s been amazing day. I’ve got lots of friends and sponsors here, not to mention my family and all the supporters of Sheffield speedway so this is for them.
“I’m a little bit lost for words, it just means so much. Thanks to everyone for their support, especially the Sheffield fans for their backing all year.”
Stead got his night off to a perfect start as he roared to victory in his opening two outings before prevailing over unbeaten duo Richard Lawson and Danny King in a blockbuster heat 12.
Desperate to preserve his unbeaten record, the Tigers’ star pulled off a daredevil move to get the better of Josh Grajczonek and take the chequered flag in heat 16.
However, Grajczonek clearly felt hard done by as he deliberately took Stead off his bike as they made their way back to the pits after the race.
The incident, much to the disgust of the passionate Sheffield supporters, caused Stead to receive lengthy treatment on track having fallen heavily on his shoulder.
He was fortunately able to walk away and continue his quest for glory, and with the pressure mounting in the Grand Final he sent Owlerton into raptures.
Having made a lightning start, he stormed clear in composed style to spark jubilant scenes and seal a memorable victory in the showcase individual event of the Premier League season.
It was a perfect way to mark what has been a sublime season for Stead as he affirmed his status as the best rider in the second tier
Premier League Riders’ Championship: 1st Simon Stead, 2nd Danny King, 3rd Ulrich Ostergaard, 4th Richard Lawson
