report from The Scotsman
WILLIAM LAWSON has made an enigmatic start, to say the least, to the new speedway season for Edinburgh Scotwaste Monarchs.
Decidedly ropey at home against Redcar Bears, The Auchterarder heat leader looked a transformed rider at Berwick Bandits on Saturday. Shielfield Park has become a temple of processional racing and almost pays homage to the myth that 'first out the gate wins'. But Lawson, who doesn't consider the circuit to be one of his favourites, looked commanding and while his sparkling 12-point total didn't prevent Monarchs from going down 52-38 in their second Premier Trophy fixture, the result was a heck of a lot closer than the slaughter many had envisaged.
Lawson galloped to second places in his first three outings-then pulled off superb victories over Jacek Rempala and top Pole and Scottish Open Champion, Stan Burza, in the final heat.
Alluding to his poor five points against Redcar, Lawson today claimed: "I can't win every race at Armadale." However, he needs to increase his percentage to achieve his publicly stated aim of notching double figures every week.
For now Lawson is happy to bask in the praise he received for his Berwick display. He said: "It was my engine which made the difference. I'm not known as a big track rider even although I like riding such places. I've never had a suitable engine before."
Reserve duo Derek Sneddon and Andrew Tully also did brilliantly and amassed 16 points between them, looking lively in comparison to some of their other team-mates.
But, worryingly for Monarchs, there remains a scoring void at the top of the side with opening pairing, skipper Ronnie Correy and Henrik Moller, failing to deliver so far.
Correy shed a chain in his first ride, then won his next.
He was then chosen to take a tactical ride in heat 11 which was a clueless decision by the Monarchs management given that Burza was in the same race and was a stone-cold certainty to take the chequered flag - which he duly did.
But Correy couldn't even beat Bandits reserve Benji Compton and trundled in last.
Correy has now suffered four retirals in two away meetings, while Moller's future is now the subject of speculation on the terraces.
The Dane seems to have regressed from last season and considering he didn't set any benchmarks in 2006, his continuation in the squad must be in doubt.
Berwick: Burza 13, Makovsky 12, Rempala 9, Coles 8, Bergstrom 7,Compton 3, Branney 0.
Monarchs: Lawson 12,Sneddon 10,Tully 6, Wethers 4, Correy 3, Moller 3, Tessari 0.
