report from the Evening News “We made the impossible possible” was Edinburgh Monarchs’ co-promoter John Campbell’s reaction after his Capital speedway heroes snatched a remarkable 45-44 Premier League victory against Newcastle Diamonds at Brough Park last night. The triumph, which moves Monarchs five points clear of Ipswich Witches at the top of the table, was their 15th win of the season, their only ‘blip’ a 45-45 draw at Ipswich last Thursday, as they stretch their unbeaten streak to 16 matches. But Campbell candidly admitted he thought Monarchs were going to taste defeat for the first time in 2014 after a controversial exclusion for No.1 Craig Cook in heat 11 seemed to leave the visitors in a hopeless position as they trailed the Diamonds by five points with just four races remaining. But a remarkable 5-1 by Cook and Sam Masters over Danny King and Ludvig Lingren in the 13th heat cut Monarchs deficit to a single point and when reserve Steve Worrall, the man with the midas touch, and skipper Derek Sneddon pulled a 4-2 out of the fire in the next race, they led their hosts 42-41. And in a nail-biting final race showdown – which had to be rerun after an unsatisfactory start – Cook did what he does best, coolly keeping his head to take the chequered flag in the fastest time of the season and dealing a hammer blow to the Diamonds. Campbell told the Evening News: “I thought we were down and out. I could not see how we could get the heat advantages we needed, let alone race winners. It was another amazing display after victory looked an impossible task.” Campbell said that heads went down after Cook’s disqualification for allegedly bringing down Oliver Greenwod on the third turn, but added: “We produced a miracle with that 5-1 in heat 13 and that gave us the chance of winning in the final heat. As ever, Craig produced the win that mattered. “It underlined yet again that we never know when we are beaten. It’s also the case, because such is the spirit in the camp, that we are not allowed to lose – we can’t lose. “At one time riders used to sit in the pits and never know what the progressive match score was, but they knew exactly how critical heat 13 was to our chances and that’s how it’s been so far this season. The team are aware of what’s going on and what needs to be done.” This latest win is especially meritorious given that Sneddon and Max Fricke, as the middle pairing, lost a brace of 5-1s against them. They were definitely not at their best, yet they are both considered Brough Park specialists, especially Sneddon, who rode for the Diamonds not so many moons ago. “They were our weakest pair,” said Campbell, “yet Derek grabbed that vital third place in the penultimate race, which allowed us to go into the last race one point in front.” Cook was unhappy with referee Darren Hartley, who judged the Monarchs No.1 had gone in too hard on Greenwood, forcing the youngster down. Cook insisted: “I did not bring him down. I was tight on the inside white line, but I never drifted off it. The referee thought otherwise.” However, the Cumbria-based ace was all smiles after the dust had settled and was told by Monarchs’ director Mike Hunter that he planned to write a book about all of Cook’s heat 15 heroics, to which the rider replied: “I’d get nervous reading it.” For Masters, his role was no less important than Cook’s and the Aussie was glad that he managed to make a decent gate in that heat 13 nerve-jangler. “I was pretty stoked with that,” he said. “I had a good first corner and just went for it. Luckily, I was able to follow ‘Cookie’ home all the way to the line.” But Masters was convinced Newcastle were primed to deny Monarchs their victory. “Halfway through the meeting I definitely thought we were going to lose – but all the boys stuck together and a win is a win no matter how small the margin is at the end. “Newcastle have had some problems this year, but they’ve a strong top four and are a very tough team to beat at home.” Worrall was Monarchs’ top scorer with 12 points from his six outings, while skipper Stuart Robson was best for the Diamonds, also with 12. Newcastle tracked new signing Chris Mills and the tail-ender was impressive with six points, including a race win. Monarchs were without Aaron Fox and recruited Danny Phillips as his stand-in. However, despite some good efforts, the youngster failed to score. Newcastle: Robson 12, King 11, Kerr 7, Lindgren 6, Mills 6, Greenwod 2. Monarchs: Worrall 12, Cook 11, Masters 9, Sedgmen 6, Fricke 5, Sneddon 2, Phillips 0.

report from the Evening News Glasgow Tigers had precious little in their speedway tank at Armadale last night and were crushed 58-32 by Edinburgh Monarchs in a woefully one sided Premier League contest that made watching paint dry seem positively riveting. It’s a long time since a Glasgow team arrived at the Lothian Arena devoid of fight and spirit. The irony is that the score totally flattered the Ashfield men who were gifted six points when Monarchs suffered exclusions to skipper Derek Sneddon, who fell in heat nine, and team-mate Max Fricke who was disqualified for a rash challenge three heats later, otherwise Monarchs would have ripped through the 60-point barrier with consummate ease. Glasgow’s top quartet, Kevin Wolbert, Theo Pijper, Mark Lemon and guest Andre Compton, have ridden Armadale hundreds of times between them yet they looked as if they had never seen the place before. And minutes after the match ended rumours were flying around that the Tigers management were already wielding the axe in response to their pitiful display. For Monarchs, whose unbeaten streak has now stretched to 15 meetings in a row this will be one of the easiest victories they record this season. Leading 36-12 at the halfway mark, the match had ceased to become a meaningful contest. But while the entertainment value was pretty non-existent, Monarchs can only ride against the opposition placed in front of them. However, the wage bill Monarchs are running up at the moment must be astronomical as the whole side continue to take the chequered flag with almost monotonous regularity. Steve Worrall for instance once again hit double figures at reserve and the way he is flying at the tail end he is in danger of bankrupting the club! Monarchs No.1 Craig Cook swept to a paid maximum and broke his own track record in the first race as he defeated Wolbert in a time of 54.08. However, Cook revealed that his form this season is not what it could be and cited clutch problems as the root cause of his slippage. Said Cook: “I have been a bit up and down recently but Steve helped me out with my clutches and I would like to thank him for that. I have been doing my head in over it and confusing myself as I have tried different things to sort the problem out. “But things worked well for me this time and I was really pleased with myself and my score. And the team just keeps rolling along, everybody is buzzing right now.” Sneddon came to grief on the fourth bend in that ninth race and said the strong sun was to blame. “The bend was a bit tricky because it had a few ruts in it and I got caught out when I couldn’t see them. But to get such a strong result over Glasgow after we made the long trip up from Ipswich on Thursday night is absolutely fantastic.” Justin Sedgmen wasn’t feeling 100 per cent but this did not stop him pitching in with ten points which included victory over Pijper in heat six. “I didn’t feel that great,” he said. “So I was quite happy to score as well as I did. Once again, though, the whole team rode well and were among the points, it just feels so good right now.” Glasgow tried to stem the Monarchs points tide but to no avail. They gave a tactical outing to Wolbert in the fifth race but the German trailed in last. Reserve Anders Thomsen, one of the better Glasgow performers, was also handed a tactical ride in heat seven but lost control on the second bend and Tigers were left gnashing their teeth for a second time. Compton who scored three points for Glasgow and is a former Scottish Open winner at Armadale, summed up the problems visiting teams face against the rampant Monarchs who show no sign of easing up. “Edinburgh are on such a roll at the moment that it is so hard to ride against them, it’s hard to see anybody beating them at home.” Monarchs recruited Leicester’s Max Clegg as a guest for Aaron Fox who was a late withdrawal after reopening his thigh wound during the 45-45 draw at Ipswich. And Clegg, and you have to say he was lucky, picked up two points for his efforts due to mishaps by his Glasgow rivals. Lemon and Wolbert both gained eight points for Glasgow, which didn’t look likely at the start of proceedings. However it was Thomsen who looked far more industrious and was one of the few Tigers to head home any of the Monarchs as he collected two wins from his five outings. It took Glasgow until heat 11 before they recorded their first heat advantage, their only other success a 5-1 in the penultimate race, by then it seemed as if some of the home team had taken pity on their visitors. Monarchs head for Newcastle Diamonds tomorrow with Worrall, who rode for them in 2013, vowing: “I want to do well there, I have something to prove.” Monarchs: Cook 14, Worrall 10, Sedgmen 10, Fricke 8, Masters 8, Sneddon 6, Clegg 2. Glasgow:- Wolbert 8, Lemon 8, Thomsen 6, Lykke 4, Compton 3, Pijper 3.

report from the Evening News Edinburgh MONARCHS are still unbeaten, but only just, after a nailbiting Premier League speedway encounter against Ipswich Witches at Foxhall Heath last night. Monarchs clung on for a 45-45 draw which earned them two match points, keeping them at the top of the table, with the improving Suffolk outfit stalking them in second position. But today Monarchs co-promoter John Campbell claimed two refereeing rulings cost his side an outright 14th triumph in a row. While he was generally content with the outcome, he revealed: "After the meeting I went round the whole team and told them they had done very well, but the reaction was one of disappointment as they felt they should have won. "I think we should have won as well, but the decisions which went against us, which other referees might have given us, proved critical at the end of the day. However the riders tried very hard and we still came away with two points to Ipswich's one and that's a good result." Campbell was unhappy with Barbara Horley after the official excluded Justin Sedgmen in heat eight for allegedly bringing down Witches' American star Gino Manzares. Sedgmen commented: "It wasn't my fault, I was nowhere near him." And Campbell was angered by a pivotal heat 13 skirmish when Sam Masters was disqualified after tumbling off, the Monarchs gaffer being in no doubt that Witches No 1 Richie Worrall was culpable for the clash, saying: "Sam was knocked off, he did not fall off. Richie Worrall is a hard man who takes no prisoners." And when Masters' partner Craig Cook, who was warned for jumping the start, was kept at the back by Worrall and Rohan Tungate in the second rerun of the race, this precious 5-1 advantage edged Ipswich 40-38 in front, with the capital side staring defeat in the face for the first time this season. However Steve Worrall, who outscored his twin brother on the night, and captain Derek Sneddon conjured up a magical 5-1 of their own in the very next race, giving Monarchs a two-point lead at 43-41 with one race to go. But Cook, who was off gate two in the heat 15 showdown, the worst starting position throughout the meeting, was beaten again by Richie Worrall and with team-mate Tungate pinching third place, the resultant 4-2 rescued Ipswich and left Monarchs with a feeling that they allowed the match to slip through their fingers. Campbell said: " We are doing so well and every match is winnable and we came very close. "I'm not being critical of Craig but he wins heat 15 in almost every match and had he done so again on this occasion, we would have won the meeting. "But Ipswich on the evidence of this form will not lose to anybody else at home in the league, although they don't always maintain their form. But they were very good and are getting pretty strong. "To leave with two match points is a very positive thing from our point of view and we have to be satisfied with that." Worrall was Monarchs' top scorer with 14 points but even he felt slightly disconsolate at the way Ipswich pulled things out of the fire at the end. "We definitely should have won," he said. "But a couple of things went against us which cost us the match. I suppose getting a draw was okay but knowing we should have won makes it feel worse." The St Helens-born rider, who scored an 18-point maximum for his National League side Cradley earlier in the week, was not downcast about his personal contribution, insisting: "I rode pretty well I think, and did my job." He added: "I knew we had to get a 5-1 back in heat 14 after losing one in the previous race. I didn't look back, I just stuck my head down for four laps and when I crossed the line and saw Derek in second I felt a lot better because I knew we had a chance of winning. "We didn't quite do it, and we felt a bit cheated, but a draw is better than losing." Monarchs entertain Glasgow Tigers at Armadale tonight, which on paper should be a straightforward victory task for them. "Hopefully" said Worrall. Ipswich: Tungate 11, Risager 10, R. Worrall 9, Manzares 9, Heeps 2, Ellis 2, Hawkins 2. Monarchs: S. Worrall 14, Cook 11, Fricke 6, Sneddon 5, Masters 5, Sedgmen 4, Fox 0.
