Sheffield sent out a strong message to their title rivals with a hard-fought victory over table-topping Edinburgh at Owlerton.
The injury-hit Tigers were dealt a late blow with in-form ace Jason Garrity ruled out with a back injury suffered in a heavy crash at Wolverhampton on Monday.
However, Jack Lee’s side showed determination and character in abundance to emerge with a well-deserved win over a star-studded Monarchs side riding high after three impressive away victories in succession.
With the Premier League play-offs on the horizon, Sheffield moved back up to the third in the table and showed they can still compete with the best despite their ongoing injury troubles.
It was a fine all-around performance to extend their unbeaten home record to 11, with star guest Brady Kurtz leading the way with a breathtaking 17 point haul. He triumphed over the in-form Craig Cook in the opening race to set the tone for a fantastic evening as his colours were lowered only once when he met Cook in heat four. The Aussie wrapped up victory with a dominant heat 13 win before taking the chequered flag in the final race.
Whilst the guesting No.1 was in fine form, he was backed up from all departments as the Tigers put in a brave all-around team effort.
With reserve partner Sissis sidelined, Josh Bates stepped up with a mature performance in the lower order.
He led the way in heat two before brilliantly picking off Monarchs’ pair Robert Branford and Justin Sedgmen after the visitors had gated on a 5-1 in heat eight. He then joined forces with David Bellego in heat 12 for a crucial maximum to give the hosts breathing space entering the closing stages.
Nicolai Klindt enjoyed the best night of his short Sheffield career so far whilst Paco Castagna put in another solid showing with all of his three points resulting in heat advantages.
David Bellego experienced an up and down night but played his part whilst teenage ace Zach Wajtknecht enjoyed a promising Premier League debut, capitalising on a blown engine for Branford to snatch second place off the final bend of heat two.
Having boosted their confidence with another sensational win, Sheffield will be looking for more of the same as they host Redcar in their final home meeting of the regular season next Thursday (7.30).
