1938 World Championship Qualification Qualifying Rounds

Changes were made to the qualifying methods, with 56 riders from the Second Division having to battle in a preliminary round. Only the top six scorers progressed to the first round proper, at this stage they were joined by 42 First Division stars. The best 28 of this group went forward to the championship round which determined the sixteen finalists. Bonus points were calculated on the championship round only, thus reducing the disparity between the highest and lowest scorers of the bonuses. Reserves didn't carry forward bonus points.
