Edinburgh Monarchs added a new chapter to their speedway history after romping to a superb 52-40 Premier League victory at Plymouth Devils on Saturday.
It was their 11th win in a row and with two home matches now before their next away trip, they look odds-on to extend this amazing sequence to 13 on the bounce.
Monarchs are throwing down the gauntlet to the rest of their rivals, virtually daring them to put the brakes on what is becoming a runaway juggernaut even at this early stage of the season.
Yet Monarchs co-promoter John Campbell today admitted he had his doubts over his side becoming record breakers. He said “ I was a bit worried about this fixture, but I shouldn’t have underestimated my own team.
“After Plymouth had signed Adam Roynon and with Kyle Newman down at reserve I felt it could have been tricky for us. But our boys were fantastic and it was probably our easiest match of the year.
“While it’s fantastic to be breaking records, it is just as important to win the matches.”
Asked if Monarchs can make it lucky 13, Campbell replied “We don’t want to get over confident but obviously home meetings are easier to win than the away ones, although some away matches are easier than others! We are a very good team and that’s why Plymouth struggled against us, and it’s tough for anybody racing against us at this moment.”
Monarchs are in the luxurious position of being able to count on almost anybody to step forward into the scoring spotlight. This was illustrated perfectly by Australian star Justin Sedgmen, who was fiery from the gate, and chalked up a terrific 14 points from his six outings to top Monarchs’ scorechart.
Plymouth had no answer to counter Sedgmen’s quicksilver starts. He was surprised at turning in such an accomplished display after confessing “ Plymouth isn’t really one of my favourite tracks, but I really enjoyed myself and was pleased with how I rode.
“But we all rode pretty well and that made life pretty easy which was nice. I just hope we can keep this run going for at least the next couple of weeks, however we don’t really worry about records, we just want to keep winning all our meetings.
“It would be good to go through the season unbeaten – but I don’t know if that will happen. But we are just going to keep doing what we’ve been doing, because its working.”
Sedgmen’s only ‘lapse’ was coming in last in the heat 15 top scorers’ showdown. “I had a choice of gates and took gate four on the outside and made my worst start of the night,” he said. “I should have taken gate two but changed my mind.”
Monarchs were in complete control of affairs and had sewn up all four league points with races to spare. Plymouth may have won the final two heats but it was purely a token show of defiance, the damage had already been done. Monarchs used rider replacement for Max Fricke who was competing in the World Under-21 qualifier at Leicester. He finished sixth on ten points but failed to make it through to the championship rounds after losing a three-man run off for the fourth qualifying spot.
