| It was third time lucky for the Linlithgow Tyres and Exhaust sponsored Caledonian Riders Championship at Armadale last night which was staged under blue skies and warm sunshine. And Monarchs reserve Max Clegg stormed to victory in the Grand Final, fending off a fierce challenge from Argentinian Coty Garcia, who was runner-up and Dane Jacob Bukhave who was third. Clegg said: “The meeting was tougher than I expected, there were some good riders in it. I’m delighted to have won it, especially after Coty and Jacob were breathing down my neck in the final. “It was an awesome meeting, and some of the racing was very hard indeed.” Clegg was the stand-out performer in the qualifying heats, dropping his only point to Workington’s James Sarjeant in heat five. And Clegg showed his determination by winning his semi-final after engineering a brilliant outside pass over Bukhave. In the Grand Final, after Luke Ruddick stalled at the start, Clegg hit the first bend in the lead and never looked back, seeing off his main challengers in tremendous style. One of the favourites for the crown, Monarchs racer Mitchell Davey, was forced to withdraw from the meeting in heat two after wrecking his machine when avoiding Shelby Rutherford, who fell in front of him. And Sarjeant’s hopes of glory were extinguised in the second semi-final when he was disqualified. But there was no doubt who was the most disappointed rider of the night. That was definitely Davey, whose bid for the title didn’t even last four laps. It was a decent meeting, with three or four outstanding races and the crowd in attendance must have been satisfied with the fare on offer. |
