report from the Edinburgh Evening News
And this triumph all but cements Monarchs’ place in the end-of-season play-offs providing they don’t do anything catastrophic at Armadale. Monarchs’ stand out performer, as he has been for the last couple of weeks, was reserve dynamo Dan Bewley, who scorched to a ten-point haul which included a brace of race wins. Apart from losing a 4-2 in the opening heat, Monarchs were never headed after this and the ease with which they outpaced the Panthers, who contain former Monarchs skipper Craig Cook in their ranks, was quite astonishing, although the Panthers have blown hot and cold on their own circuit this season. After skipper Sam Masters was beaten by Cook in that first race, Monarchs then pulled off maximum 5-1 advantages in heats three and four to lead 16-8 and a further 5-1 success in the eighth race courtesy of Bewley and Mark Riss pushed Monarchs further in front 29-18 with the home side in disarray and unable to respond. This prompted the Panthers to hand Ulrich Ostergaarrd a tactical outing in heat ten in an attempt to halt the Monarchs points onslaught. And while the Panthers grabbed a 5-3 verdict it was basically their one and only throw of the dice as Monarchs never looked like being pegged back. Indeed the Capital side clinched the match points with two races to spare after extracting yet another 5-1 advantage in heat 13 through Masters and German partner Kevin Wolbert which gave them an unassailable 45-34 lead. Bewley received excellent support from Masters who bagged 11 points and Wolbert who was Monarchs top scorer with 12 points. A really impressive win by Monarchs who host the Panthers in the return tie at Armadale on Friday.
