Jubilant Edinburgh Monarchs were crowned Premier League speedway Fours champions tonight for a fourth time after a battle royal with defending holders Somerset Rebels at Redcar Stadium.
Monarchs laid the foundations for their success in the first half when skipper Craig Cook, Sam Masters and Justin Sedgmen, won four races between them pulling Monarchs three points clear of their other rivals after eight races.
Monarchs’ fourth member Erik Riss failed to score from his first three rides and this allowed Somerset to move ahead of the Capital quartet after heat 12 with Ipswich Witches in close attendance. But a brilliant and timely victory by Riss in heat 14 drew Monarchs level with Somerset on 26 points apiece.
And although Masters could only finish third in the next race it was enough for Monarchs to nose in front by a single point, 27-26. It all came down to the heat 16 finale when the unbeaten Cook faced Somerset’s Brady Kurtz who was also unbeaten.
Typically Cook proved once again he is the man for the big occasion and took the chequered flag in fantastic style to clinch the title for Monarchs as Kurtz could only finish third behind Ipswich star Danny King.
Monarchs finished on 30, Somerset were second on 27 with Ipswich third on 24. Newcastle Diamonds were fourth on 15. |
