report from the Peterborough Telegraph
Peterborough Panthers team boss Carl Johnson has refused to give up hope of winning the Premier League Cup – despite suffering first leg defeat on home shale yesterday (October 5).
The city side’s seven-and-a-half year trophy drought loooks set to continue after they were pipped 46-44 by Edinburgh at the East of England Showground to leave themselves with a mountain to climb in the second leg in Scotland on Friday (October 10).
And with the treble-chasing Monarchs unbeaten at their Armadale base all season, few will give a Panthers team of patched-up by guests any hope of lifting the trophy.
Johnson said: “We wanted to go up to Edinburgh with a decent lead to defend and it is disappointing we couldn’t manage that.
“It wasn’t a bad performance by any means as all the lads got among the points, but it wasn’t enough on the day.
“But we know the job we need to do on Friday. We need to become the first team to win at Edinburgh all season.
“It goes without saying it will be very tough, but have to go up there believing the team we track can do it.”
Panthers’ line-up for the second leg is yet to be settled although Richard Lawson is again expected to deputise at number one for Lasse Bjerre.
Johnson insists uncertainty regarding the club’s future will not have had an effect on his riders. Current chief Mick Horton will pull out of his two-year leasehold deal at the end of the current season.
Horton claimed that yesterday’s clash could be the last-ever to be staged at the East of England Showground after 45 unbroken seasons of racing in the city.
Johnson said: “I’ve tried to keep the talk about the club’s future away from the riders.
“They are here to do a job and that’s race their bikes, score points and try to win this trophy.
“That is all the boys and myself are focused on. Other people will decide if the club continues.”
