Powderhall first opened in 1870 with Athletics being the main attraction. Chariots of Fire legend Eric Liddell won many events at Scottish Amateur Athletic Association Championship. Professional Athletics also featured and it's most famous race became the Powderhall Sprint which is still held to this day now at the racecourse in nearby Musselburgh. Powderhall was adjacent to another sports arena the Logie Green football ground which held the all Edinburgh Scottish Cup final of 1896 between Hearts and Hibernian. Many of Edinburgh’s football clubs have called Powderhall home at one time Heart of Midlothian, Hibernian, Leith athletic, St Bernard’s and Edinburgh City have all played games at the ground. Greyhound racing was first held at the ground in 1927 and continued for many decades. When Old Meadowbank closed Powderhall was the ideal choice for a new home but the Monarchs were refused by the Greyhound Racing Association the grounds owners so they relocated to Coatbridge. In 1977 a change of heart by the owners allowed the Monarchs to move into Powderhall they were to stay until the ground was demolished for a new housing development. Powderhall was perhaps one of Speedways finest venues with a seated grandstand which included glass fronted bars. Terracing and more bars on the third and forth bends and a covered stand on the back straight. The first meeting at the ground attracted 10,000 fans in a match against Berwick Bandits with the visitors winning 36-42.
